1. Get some time alone
A relationship might be a huge part of life but everyone needs a little me-time. After being on the road together we can't stress this one enough. When you see someone 24/7 it's natural to bicker a little bit. Heck, when I'm alone I'll bicker with myself in my head! Escaping each other to do your own thing is awesome. And once you're apart you'll naturally start to miss each other. Once you're back together again you'll forget all the petty stuff and just enjoy having your partner back.
2. divide chores
Penny cooks meals and Buck drives Campy. It might seem a little old fashioned but it just works for us. Penny has a hard time driving a stick shift and Buck can barely cook a bowl of noodles without burning something. Life on the road creates a ton of tasks and agreeing on how to split them up can ease a lot of tension.
3. expect less privacy
It's basically impossible to hide anything from your significant other when you're living in a tiny space together. But couples are close and the walls of privacy are always lowering as the relationship grows. It's the lack of privacy from public that we were unprepared for. Anything that happens on the road is easily seen or heard. Voices travel through camper windows and anyone can catch some relationship gossip if they try.
4. Be a team
This one isn't just for living on the road. With each unexpected issue, there's the option of blaming each other. Maybe someone forgot to put the oil cap back on after the last maintenance stop. It doesn't matter who's at fault, you're both in this together and you need to find a new cap, not argue about it for an hour.
This one should probably be at the top of the list. But I've already numbered everything so it will have to do as #5. Communication is the foundation of any solid relationship. When you're living in a small space and seeing each other constantly, a healthy dialogue is a necessity. If something is bothering you, bring it up. If it seems like something is bothering your partner, bring it up. Don't let things get swept under the rug until they're a bigger problem than they need to be.
Relieving stress and laying around together is awesome. Since we're not working 40 hour weeks, we have plenty of time to sleep in everyday and enjoy the important things in life.
